Writing Research Grants
June 14-18, 2010Sandra Funk, PhD, FAAN and Elizabeth Tornquist, MA, FAAN. This intensive, weeklong institute is designed to assist nursing faculty and post-doctoral fellows to write successful research grant applications for federal or other major funding. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) PHS-398 application format will be used. Topics to be addressed include: selection of a problem for study, productive use of the literature, development of the argument for the study, writing specific aims, presentation of preliminary work, development of methods and analysis plans, and issues of operationalization. Protection of human subjects, data safety monitoring, budgets, budget justifications, timelines, biosketches, and other key application components will also be covered, as will the NIH review criteria and process, coping with the reviewers' critiques, and preparing a resubmission. Lectures, group discussion, individual and small group consultations, and time for library work and writing will be provided. Participants are encouraged to come with a focused research topic completed pilot work for the proposed study.

Developing Competitive Intervention Studies
June 21-25, 2010Merle Mishel, PhD, RN, FAAN and Sue Thoyre, PhD, RN. This institute will focus on teaching a process developed by the instructors for identifying a theory of the problem and moving from that step to a theory of the intervention and the relationship between these theories. The institute will be of benefit to doctorally prepared nurses who have a background in studying a specific topic. Two days will focus on a theory of the problem with three days focused on the intervention. We will address the connection between these theories and also include how to identify mediators and moderators for the intervention.

Family Research in the Genomic Era
July 19-22, 2010Marcia Van Riper, PhD, RN and Kathleen Knafl, PhD, FAAN. Advances in genetics and genomics are rapidly changing the landscape of health care. Never before has there been such a demand for genetic services, especially genetic testing. Genetic conditions are often described as family diseases and genetic testing is increasingly being recognized as a family affair. However, relatively few researchers have used a family perspective to examine the experience of being tested for or living with a genetic condition. This institute focuses on the unique conceptual and methodological challenges of family research, with particular attention paid to the implications of recent advances in the field of genetics/genomics for family researchers. Specific content includes: conceptual frameworks for studying families, qualitative, quantitative, and mixed method designs, family measures, analytic techniques, ethical issues, and strategies for incorporating genetics and genomics into your program of research. Participants will have an opportunity for individual consultation with experts in the field. This institute will be of interest to graduate students and faculty conducting or planning to conduct family or family-related research. (Beginning or intermediate level)

Instrumentation: Development, Testing and Revision
August 2-6, 2010Mary Lynn, PhD, RN. This week-long course will focus on instrument development, but what is "right to do" in development is also what you need to consider in adaptation, revision or re-employment of instruments. The institute will be both theoretical and practical; attendees will know what to do and why they are doing it. Included in the content will be classical measurement theory, reliability, validity, types of scaling, item writing, instrument components, pilot and field testing, factor analysis, and a host of smaller topics. Mary Lynn has developed and published a number of instruments and has received NIH funding for testing some of them. A good time will be had by all!

August 9-13, 2010Diane Kjervik, JD, RN, FAAN. This intensive course focuses on legal research methods use to analyze primary and secondary legal authority affecting the provision of health and nursing care, the health care professions and organizations, communities within which care is provided and the populations served. The purpose of the institute is to analyze the qualitative aspects of legal research and examine legal research methods which address the intersection of nursing phenomena and the law. The course provides the opportunity for participants to synthesize legal and nursing phenomena and apply legal research methods to work on their dissertation or other research topics. The course features presentations by faculty and hands-on experience with legal research in consultation with Law librarians and Health Sciences librarians.
